At the time Burrinjuck Dam was constructed it was ranked as one of the world's greatest dams. It supplies irrigation to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Building commenced in 1906 and work has been carried out over several years to ensure the dam can handle the largest possible flood - one that would be expected to occur, on average, only once in 100,000 years.
The area of stored water is 5,600 hectares. The catchment area is 12,900 square kilometres and the shoreline is 645 kilometres. It is 5.5 times larger than Sydney Harbour.
It is a water sports playground and fisherman's paradise.
Facilities include a picnic area and free electric barbecues.
Currently the dam sits at over 80 per cent capacity.
