Dr John Kirk founded Clonakilla Vineyard in 1971. He first learned about wine while working in his family's hotel in Ireland, where at the tender age of 14, he was put in charge of the wine cellar and had to learn about wine so that he could make the right purchasing decisions.
Today, the winery is run by Dr Kirk's son Tim, who produces wines in a range of styles, including Cabernet-Merlot, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. However, the winery is best known for its Shiraz which is always in limited supply due to demand.
Clonakilla's wines have been exported to the USA since 1998 and are now also exported to England. The award-winning cool climate wines appear on the wine lists of many of Australia's leading restaurants and are available through a select number of specialist fine wine retailers.
