Bringing in the Canberra vintage 2017 harvest

Vintage 2017 started with a wet winter/spring, delivering approximately 200mm more rain prior to budburst compared to same time last season.  This above average rainfall set vines up for a very healthy growing season.

A slight dry period through summer limited disease pressure through the growing season. These warm but not hot conditions allowed for good growing and ripening of fruit.

The much milder ripening pattern reduced the compression of vintage that was experienced last season, with reports across the district that early and late picked fruit looked in great condition.

Later ripening varieties benefited from a mild to warm Autumn with very little rain or disease pressure.

Grape growers in the Canberra District expected to pick about 3,000 tonnes of fruit this harvest. Levels appear to be slightly higher than last season.

Initial signs are that fruit quality is expected to be good to very good but as always, time will tell

This report was prepared by Leo Quirk from Mount Majura Vineyard for the Canberra District Wine Industry Association who also provided the images.
