Any allergenics used as "processing aids" must be now declared on the label. Some of these are : egg , milk, fish, nuts etc where egg= egg white, milk= skim milk & casien, fish= swim bladder material (isinglass) , nuts = usually powdered hazelnut shells. These materials may remain in wine in sub-microscopic quantities & could concievably affect those who are very allergic. Other allergies are known to exist to natural components and /or wine faults which are not additives.

Egg white has been used as a natural fining agent for wine (for removal of particles prior to bottling) for many centuries. The egg white coagulates with the particles, and is filtered out, leaving the wine clear and no trace of egg white. However, one of our subscribers whose husband has a severe egg allergy is keen not to take a risk that any egg remains, and has asked for our assistance: It is regarding the use of egg white in red wines. My husband has an egg allergy (severe) and we are keen to find out, how to find red wines - Merlots mainly, that don't contain egg . Obviously quite a few brands state it on the bottle, but many don't. Can anyone recommend any brands that might give them assurance, or with any experiences in this area? They would greatly appreciate any assistance. |
