Look for something from the South of France. Either a Cotes du Rhone ('98 is a great vintage and you should be able to find something for around $20-$25) or something from Languedoc. You have a better chance of finding a good QPR from these areas than the traditional Bordeaux or Burgundy. Happy hunting.

Fine wines of Europe (Paul de Burgh Day) has several things that fit the bill. There are a few cheaper Bordeaux worth looking at, eg. Ch. Thieuley and Clos Floridene, some good things from the Languedoc and Southern Rhone, eg. 1998 Domaine de L'Oratoire Saint Martin Cairanne (a village Cotes du Rhone).
This is quite delicious stuff with lashings of fruit and flavour and quite fun to drink now but is an each way bet to keep for a few years. Good luck!

Cheap French Wine?Don't waste your time.Thin, astringent, too acidic without the fruit,no bouquet in other words bland. They are
so many good OZ wine to choose from....
p/s French do not know how to make commercial wine. The AOC is bringing their ind. back to the dark ages. Some of the Vin d'pays are make by
OZ flying winemakers.
