VisitVineyards.com's oldest Member Dame Elisabeth Murdoch celebrates her 101st birthday on the 8th February, and perhaps she will be enjoying one of her favourite white wines, Delatite's Sylvia, for her birthday lunch. The riesling - a kabinett-style - is medium-sweet and low in alcohol, and is a great accompaniment to salmon and other light dishes. Dame Elisabeth proclaims 'I drink it far too quickly - but then I do everything quickly!'
As well as enjoying the fine flavour and relatively low alcohol (10.5% in the 2008 release), the wine is named in honour of Dame Elisabeth's elder sister, the late Sylvia Greene, who with husband Robert Ritchie Snr founded Delatite Winery near Mansfield in the Upper Goulburn region of Central Victoria, where vineyards were later planted in 1968, and whose descendent David Ritchie today produces this and the other beautiful aromatic wines for which the vineyard is renowned.
