This month we are featuring the Barossa and Coonawarra regions of South Australia, and in keeping with the theme, VisitVineyards.com subscribers and Members can win a trio of superb 2005 wines from the Coonawarra and Barossa Valley: Elderton's Barossa Ode to Lorraine Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot (RRP A$36 plus postage), Thorn-Clark's Wiliam Randell Barossa Valley Shiraz (RRP A$49 plus postage) and Bowen Estate's Coonawarra Estate Shiraz (RRP A$23 plus postage).
Second prize is one of two copies of Seasonal by Steve Manfredi (RRP A$34.95 plus postage) and third prize is one of three copies of Hilary McNevin's Guide to Fish (RRP A$29.95 plus postage)
FIRST PRIZE
In keeping with November's Barossa and Coonawarra themes, these three outstanding South Australian reds all have the potential for cellaring for years to come but only if you have the will power to squirrel them away in the wine cellar. They all make excellent drinking now and each have their own individual highlights. Elderton's Barossa Ode to Lorraine 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot was named in honour of their co-founder from the 1970's, Lorraine Ashmead but the wine itself is a product of 64 and 104 year old vines. Tasting notes tell of full-bodied and full fruit flavours and the potential to age for next 10+ years.
Thorn-Clark's Wiliam Randell 2005 Shiraz is the flagship wine from this Barossa Valley vineyard with a history of wine-making over six geenrations. The Shiraz is sourced from their Kabinge vineyard which is true Barossa Valley terroir and this is reflected in the dense, fruity flavours which are balanced with a spicy character. Again it's suggested that this wine can be stored and savoured until 2012 but a special serving of King Island eye fillet might just be the enough to bring the tasting forward.
The third member of this impressive trio comes from the Coonawarra - Bowen Estate's Shiraz 2005 - one of our perennial favourites. This vineyard might be relatively small but it has a great record of producing superb red wines and this is no exception. Prime Coonawarra terra rossa soil contributes to the deep red colour of the wine. The label simply states "classic Coonawarra" and that it certainly is.
Drink now or cellar for a few years, these three wines will be an excellent addition to any cellar or special dining experience.
SECOND PRIZE (2 copies to be won)
Spring has sprung and you're looking for something special to whip up to celebrate the warming days and blooming trees. You won't have to flip through pages and pages of tasty but not quite Sping recipes with this great book from Steve Manfredi. Seasonal is colour coded to the season so it's simply a matter of picking your season and presto, (or should that be pesto!?) you're faced with food options that just cry out - it's spring.
Seasonal will give you the right recipe in the right season and using the freshest, in-season quality produce.
THIRD PRIZE (3 copies to be won)
If you want to know what fish to enjoy whilst also thinking of our planet and how to prepare it simply but imaginatively, then this book is a must for your kitchen (and when talking to the fishmonger). Along with details on the sustainability of various species, Hilary McNevin's Guide to Fish also gives you each fish's ideal "bedfellows" - the seasonal accompaniments that work best with that particular fish.
Even if sustainability isn't top of your mind, this Guide will provide you with some tasty and inter-changeable recipes for your next fresh fish purchase along with some recommended wines and beers to match the flavours just so.
Your prizes will be posted to you anywhere in Australia or overseas for books. We regret we are cannot post wine, food or beer overseas.
