Attention alternative wine lovers – like to meet a Strangebird from Queensland's Granite Belt?

Along with fun in the sun, long beaches and the Reef, head to the hills and you'll find two of our favourite things, magnificent wine and food! This region has a growing reputation for premium wines and award-winning success with unusual varieties – so much so that the trail showcasing the alternative wines is being well worn by visitors and locals alike.

Can't make it to the Granite Belt just yet? Enter below and you could get a real taste for the (Strange) birdlife with a mixed case of alternative wines to be won!

Did you know that the 55 or so Granite Belt vineyards are amongst the highest in Australia with an elevation of between 600m and 1000m?  Winter temperatures drop to around 0°C while summer gets up around the 27°C mark. Combined with their decomposed granite soils this creates a versatile growing region and one which is obviously loved by many alternative varieties.

The Strangebird Wine Trail offers 25 wineries where you can discover the eclectic range of wines being developed by winemakers keen to look beyond the typical plantings.

Wander along and sip on a barbera here or a pinotage there. Fall in love with a tempranillo or discuss the characteristics of Nero d'Avola with the winemaker. Many of these emerging varietals have been popular in European regions for generations in part because of their talent for matching so well with food. And there is plenty of good food along the trail to suit!

The Strangebird Trail has an great touring brochure (downloadable) with wineries, the varieties and their ideal food matches plus a very handy note on how to pronounce them for those of us not all that familiar with the languages. (And you'll impress the winemaker!).

Win this prize and you'll be taking your own trip along the Strangebird Trail with a bottle each of:

  • Lucas Estate 2010 Unwooded Tempranillo
  • Lucas Estate 2009 Petit Verdot
  • Banca Ridge Gateway Series - Tempranillo 2013

and rounding out the dozen, two bottles of Sirromet 2013 Verdelho.
