Best's Great Western commemorative book - celebrating 150 years
Best's Wines, Great Western, Victoria

Best’s Great Western celebrated its 150th year, a magnificent feat, by publishing a commemorative book. As the anniversary year closes, the celebrations and history will live on in tales told by family members from all generations around that most convivial of places, the dining table.

We have two copies of the distinctive Best's Great Western: celebrating 150 years to be won.

Henry Best established the property in 1866 and built it up with a passion until he passed away in 1913. In 1920 William Thomson bought the business and today the fifth generation of the Thomson family runs Best’s Great Western.

Of the 38 different varieties of vines planted 150 years ago in the Nursery Block at Best’s, eight of these are yet to be identified but CSIRO continues to try! (These grapes still go into the Nursery Block reds and whites today).

So with this 150 years under the belt, the winery has a substantial history to share but Best's Great Western: celebrating 150 years is no dry, historical timeline.

Yes it has many old glorious photos of times long past along with telling the story of the wine and brand – the beginnings and evolution over those years – but this book offers a very different way of getting to know the people behind the wine.

We meet various members of both families (historical and living) at that most convivial of place, around the dining table.  Here they tell tales and recollect their part in the Best’s history whilst sipping on the current wines and feasting on a home cooked meal (one you can even cook yourself as recipes are supplied!)

The scenes are set in the Around the table with sections, the food and wine are served and the conversations begin. Some of the older ones no doubt recreated from the rich family records and memories while the current ones reflect the conversations held around many a modern winery table – cellar door visitors, water and vines etc.

Best’s Great Western: celebrating 150 years is a striking publication with wonderful photos and a cracking story to tell. And there’s recipes for some delectable food too, fit for your grandfather… or great, great grandfather!
