Seven areas around the foreshore of Lake Macquarie make up the state conservation area. Awaba Bay, the most northerly section, has a foreshore walking track that meanders through dry sclerophyll forest, past shell middens and to a tranquil wetland where bird and frog calls can be heard year round. The bushland and open space of Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area lines 16 kilometres of foreshore.
