Canowindra 100 mile dinner

One of the most innovative events on the wine calendar is the 'Dinner With The Neighbours' annual 100-Mile dinner held in Canowindra, in Central Western New South Wales, as part of the Orange FOOD Week.

The main street of Canowindra is closed for the occasion and decorated with hundreds of colourful lanterns.

Long tables are set up in the middle of the heritage-listed (and crooked) main street (designed so that bullock teams could turn) for a communal feast of regional produce and wines sourced from within a 100-mile radius of Orange, including the Bathurst, Cowra, Mudgee and Canowindra regions.

Each region serves a dinner course and several leading wineries from each district have their wines on offer. Choose from a savoury Hamilton’s Bluff sangiovese, or perhaps a delicate Mayfield Vineyard riesling from Orange. Or maybe enjoy both.

The event espouses the merits of the 100-mile diet, which advocates eating and drinking locally on the premise that locally produced food is healthier, tastier and better for the environment and local economies.

The 2011 Canowindra 100 Mile Dinner will be held on April 11 and costs $80 per person (wines extra) and is part of Orange Food Week.

Canowindra is home to several small wineries – and a great weekend destination. Thriving at a time when many small country towns are dying, its many old buildings are often used as sets for period movies.

The town is the Australian capital of hot air ballooning (Canowindra Balloon Challenge 2011) and has several art galleries along with The Age of Fishes Museum, which celebrates one of the world’s greatest fossil discoveries. Bushranger Ben Hall once held locals hostage in the Royal Hotel – where you can still enjoy a drink.

Taste Canowindra is a facility in the town that offers the chance to sample up to 50 local wines from 10 local vineyards.
