Tasting notes: Stone & Wood Brewing Company (NSW)
Hand-crafted beer from Byron Bay
Stone and Wood Brewing Company was founded by three blokes who share a love of beer, taking a fresh approach to brewing handcrafted beer in Byron Bay, one of the greatest places on earth.
Their brewing philosophy is based on brewing beer that makes the most of the ingredients available today. Beer that simply lets the flavours and aromas of the ingredients shine through by keeping the processes to a minimum. Beer that is simply good to drink.
The beers are an expression of the Stone and Wood approach to life - trying to take things slow and keep it simple.
The range of beers is simple: … a lager … an ale, and the specially brewed Stone Beer.
Stone and Wood Pacific Ale
Inspired by its home on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and brewed using all Australian barley, wheat and Galaxy hops, Pacific Ale is cloudy and golden with a big fruity aroma and a refreshing finish. After being dry hopped at the end of fermentation, Stone and Wood Pacific Ale is then drawn straight from the storage tank at the brewery into kegs and bottles.
In short: Big fruity hops … a cloudy haze … refreshing finish.
4.4% alc/vol - available in 330mL and 500ml bottles and on tap
Stone and Wood Lager
This Germanic style lager is brewed from pure German malt which adds both a softness to the palate and a full bodied malt character. German hops Tettnang and Spalt are added to the kettle to provide a subtle bitterness that is in perfect harmony with the malt. By taking a slow and careful approach to brewing a delicate but finely balanced beer is created that is slowly fermented at cold temperatures. It is then given the gift of time to lager and develop its complexity.
Stone and Wood Pale Lager has a sparkling light colour, and a flavour that strikes a fine balance between its subtle hop aroma and full malt palate with a soft clean finish.
In short: Subtle hops … full malt … and a soft clean finish.
4.7% alc/vol - available in 330mL bottles and on tap
Stone and Wood Stone Beer
As a tribute to the brewers of the Middle Ages Stone Beer is brewed by adding wood fired stones to the kettle to rouse the boil and intensify the malt characters of the brew. Long before humans came to grips with technology they used stone and wood to brew their daily beer. The brewing stones also caramelise the brew to create subtle but rich toffee like flavours.
Stone and Wood Stone Beer has a deep red hue, rich caramel and toffee malt characters balanced with firm hop bitterness.
In short: Intense … caramel … toffee … firm bitterness
