Highland Heritage celebrates 70 years of winemaking

Orange’s Highland Heritage has released its new ‘Patrono Series’ to commemorate an impressive 70 years of winemaking.

The new wines comprise the 2015 Highland Heritage ‘Patrono’ Shiraz ($55) and 2015 Highland Heritage ‘Patrono’ Cabernet Sauvignon ($55).

The Highland Heritage story begun in 1946 when winemaker, Carmelo D’Aquino, made six barrels of wine in his tin shed winery, establishing a new industry in Orange’s cool climate region.

Still family owned and operated, third generation vigneron, Rex D’Aquino has released the ‘Patrono Series’ to honour his family’s wine making heritage.

While the D’Aquino family have since planted substantial vineyards in Orange, the early wines were made from grapes sourced across NSW and South Australia. “Carmelo was somewhat of a negotiant, sourcing parcels of fruit from various regions and making styles of wine reminiscent of his homeland,” explained owner Rex D’Aquino.

“We have seen great changes over the past 70 years. From traversing Australia to buy grapes we moved closer to home, making wine from Cowra during the 1980s and now making our flagship wines from vines that we planted here in Orange 1985.”

The new 2015 Highland Heritage ‘Patrono Series’ Shiraz was cold soaked for three days prior to fermentation. It was pressed off into a combination of new, one year old and three year old French and American oak for 14 months in order to build complexity and balance with the purity of the Orange Region fruit.

The 2015 Highland Heritage ‘Patrono Series’ Cabernet Sauvignon was made from grapes grown in the Borenore region of Orange at an elevation of 830 metres.

The fruit was picked on the 24th March, crushed and cold soaked for five days. On completion of fermentation the wine was pressed to tank, racked off gross lees and matured for 14 months in French barriques.

“It’s been an exciting journey,” said Rex, “We’re confident of a very bright future in Orange. There are many winegrowers making great wines here now. The vines are maturing and we are all building experience with the region; with every vintage comes an increase in quality.”
