2016 Rowlee Nebbiolo

Rowlee Wine’s slow road to establishing their brand has paid dividends with their newly released 2016 Rowlee Chardonnay ($40) named Wine of the Show at the recent 2017 Orange Wine Show. Joining this flagship release is the 2016 Rowlee Nebbiolo ($40).

Established in 2000 by Deonne and Nik Samodol, the vineyard sits at an elevation of 950 metres above sea level on the northern slopes of Orange’s Mount Canobolas.

The winemaking and viticulture at Rowlee is overseen by daughter Nicole and her partner James. The eight-hectare vineyard includes Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Arneis.

Winemaking commenced in 2013 with Nicole Samodol bringing a wealth of industry experience to Rowlee having worked in some of Melbourne’s leading restaurants and hotels including the Stokehouse and the Adelphi.

“Being a member of the Victorian Sommeliers gave me the opportunity to get behind the scenes with Australia’s best cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers,” explained Nicole.

“Our philosophy is to make small batches of single vineyard wines, with minimal winemaking intervention. From the inception, we have collaborated with an experienced and talented team including mentor winemaker PJ Charteris.”

The natural cool environment of Orange, long ripening and ancient volcanic soils, together with high elevation, have provided the perfect conditions for their single vineyard wines which grow amidst the beauty of Rowlee’s historic farming property.

“While the property dates back to 1880, the vineyard is still relatively young; we’ve learnt a lot along the way and are eager to learn more. We are lucky to be in Orange where vignerons and winemakers are harvesting their collective wisdom to make the best possible wines.”

The Rowlee Nebbiolo is the only one of its kind in Orange. “A family connection to Europe and a love of Italian food inspired us to plant Nebbiolo and Arneis. They are proving to be well suited to the cold climes of Orange.”
