On the night of the 27 of June 1945, some Japanese Prisoners of War (POW's) planned to a breakout from Camp 7, north of West Hay. Because of the line of fire from the Light Machine Gun posts at various points, West Hay and Mungadale were evacuated and the town put on full alert. Most of the Japanese POW's had been transferred to Hay following the Cowra breakout of Saturday 5 of August 1944. Italian Captain Edguardo Simone (the fox or le volpe) was sent to Hay Camp because of two previous escapes. He was the only person to escape from the Hay Camp successfully, but was eventually caught in Melbourne a few months later.
