The Southern Highlands of NSW boasts 60 vineyards and 17 cellar doors which in itself offers many great reasons to visit. But if you also enjoy some art with your wine, or vice versa, a stop in the busy regional town of Bowral is a must.

Ten Thousand Paces is a hybrid gallery, shop, arts project and regional wine hub selling art, design and cool craft alongside hundreds of wines from local vineyards.

How it started

It all began with Hamish Ta-Me’ opening a gallery to coincide with the Tulip Festival in 2014. In conversation with a mate (as often happens) who owns a vineyard, the idea of including local wines, beer and cider was born.

Obviously not being able to, nor having any desire to compete with the big liquor chains, Hamish put his own geographical constraints on the liquor licence, preferring to focus on what they were already doing: being champions of regional excellence, and identifying and creating strong communities and viable long term careers and incomes for regional creatives and artisanal producers.

What's in a name?

Ten Thousand Paces refers to the circumference around the shop that most of the artists, makers, crafters and designers live and work within [Ed: approx 10 km].

How the artists work

Each artist pays a weekly rent to access an exhibition space then pays 10% to the Gallery. They also spend one day a month working  in the shop, gaining experience in the retail world and customer service with twelve also being formally mentored.

The artworks are unique and only available through the gallery.

Local wine a feature

At the time of writing, each of the 33 local vineyards in the Highlands is represented and the range is now expanding slowly outwards to include a few of the other immediate regions. There are two vineyards from Goulburn and another from the south coast. Next will be some of the stand out vineyards from regions like Murrumbateman, Canberra etc.

Like the artworks, the wines are often only available in handful of places and often exclusively through Ten Thousand Paces.

Every week there is a wine tasting on Thursday from 4-6pm and a Saturday afternoon is planned shortly for the local vineyards that don’t have a cellar door.

A part of the community

The location also plays an important part in the success of the gallery, being one of the busiest spots in the main street of Bowral. It's about putting the art in front of as many eyes as possible but also making art a part of everyday life, another of Hamish's aims.

Hamish says "We have an exciting and dynamic vision for the future of creative communities in regional and rural settings. A vision that sees communities thriving and artists being recognised for their skills. A vision of regional excellence in all artisan artforms, be they the visual arts or artisan skills like winemaking and more. We are doing this every day and making it happen."
