Turkish Meze by Sevtap Yuce

So what does 'meze' mean? Sevtap Yuce defines meze as '...a way of living and eating, sharing all, including breakfast, lunch and dinner...'.  'It is personal, it is seasonal, it is flexible – it is the food that matches your choice of drink.'

Sharing is the real essence of Turkish Meze.

The first section covers dips – the ultimate share food – from Cucumber Yoghurt (Cacik) through to Roasted Beetroot and Pistachio Dip (Pancar Salatasi Ve Antep Fistigi) and Tomato Dip (Antep Ezmesi). The dips are straightforward recipes not requiring a lot of cooking time for something that gives a significant flavour blast and leaves a lasting and flavoursome impression amongst those who shared them.

Turkish Meze is well indexed and contains a significant amount of Turkish recipes. The last chapter is a 'Basics' section that contains hints on how to prepare different types of foods and how to create some staples that are required for some main recipes throughout the book.

The book is broken down into dips, small dishes, dolmas, salads, vegetables, fish and seafood, meat, sweets and basics. Standouts include Parsley and Feta Pies (Pogca), Ciga Borek (Cigara Boregi), Lamb Kofte (Kuzu Koftesi), Stuffed Squid (Kalamar Dolmasi), Artichoke and Potato Salad (Enginarli Patates Salatasi), Circassian Chicken with Paprika Oil and Walnut Tarator (Cerkez Tavugu), Lamb Pide (Lahmacun) and Mascarpone with Raspberry and Boysenberry Torte (Framboazli Tatli).

Overall Turkish Meze has splendid photography. Itit exposes Turkish cooking in a simple and straightforward manner and is put together by an author who has a real passion for Turkish cuisine.

It is certainly not a cookbook for everyone, but if you are a fan of Turkish food as we are in my house, or even mildly curious about Turkish food, then Turkish Meze would be a great place to start.

For those who love Turkish foods, go and get it!
