Qantas wins Best First Class Wine Cellar award

Qantas announced recently it had won four prestigious Business Traveller magazine 2009 Cellars in the Sky Awards, including Best First Class Cellar.
Qantas Group Executive Customer and Marketing, Ms Lesley Grant, said the awards demonstrated the airline's focus on offering customers a premium inflight experience.
“We are proud to have won the Best First Class Cellar award in addition to three other awards and first runner-up prizes in two other categories,” said Ms Grant.
“These awards support the strong customer feedback on the premium wines we select for Qantas flights. Over the years, Qantas has built up one of Australia's most enviable cellars, enabling it to choose from a range of premium wines to match Neil Perry's menus on both domestic and international flights."
Qantas sources more than 300 different wines each year from more than 250 different producers, showcasing the diversity of the Australian industry. A panel of qualified judges and respected winemakers, including Vanya Cullen, Stephen Pannell and Tom Carson, lend specialist expertise to the airline’s award-winning position in the industry.
Qantas also runs the Qantas Sommeliers in the Sky training program for its cabin crew to ensure that flight attendants’ wine knowledge reaches a level comparable with that of top restaurant sommeliers.
Qantas has won four awards in the 2009 Cellars in the Sky Awards:
- Best First Class Cellar
- Best First Class Red
- Best First Class Fortified and Sweet
- Best Presented Wine List
First runner up prizes were also awarded to Qantas for Best Business Class Sparkling and Best First Class Sparkling.
About the Cellars in the Sky Awards
Cellars in the Sky is an international award program run by Business Traveller magazine in association with Wine International magazine. The Awards have been held annually for the last 20 years and aim to reward the quality and innovation of wine available on long-haul flights.
The awards are established by a respected group of judges in a blind tasting to determine 13 winning categories. This year’s chairman of the judges, Charles Metcalfe, also served as chairman of the International Wine Challenge, one of the most respected blind tastings in the world.
