Part of the West MacDonnell National Park, the waters of deep and narrow Redbank Gorge, located 157 kilometres west of Alice Springs, are very cold all year round and are best negotiated with an airbed or similar flotation device. Visitors can reach the gorge along a two kilometre, 1.5 hour return walk alongside the creekbed.
Explore this ancient and impressive landform, then sit down and relax, soaking up the scenic surrounds. For those with more time and energy, Section 12 of the Larapinta Trail starts and finishes at Redbank Gorge and takes visitors up Mt Sonder, the highest point and end of the Trail. The walk is 15.8 kilometres and takes six hours return. The walk is graded hard and should only be attempted by fit people with previous bushwalking experience.
Two camping areas are provided at Redbank Gorge, camping fees apply (cash only, no change is available). Both campgrounds have picnic tables, toilets and fire pits. The Woodland campground also has gas barbecues.
The five kilometre access road from Namatjira Drive to Redbank Gorge is unsealed and a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
