The Stuart Memorial is located in Raintree Park, Smith Street Mall in the heart of Darwin city. It is a tribute to John McDouall Stuart, whose epic south to north crossing of the continent became the route for the Overland Telegraph Line and eventually the Stuart Highway. Stuart left Adelaide in October 1861 and reached a point east of Darwin in July 1862.
The Stuart Memorial depicts the explorer pointing to the locale where he foresaw a north Australian city could be built.
