A touch of South Africa at the Real Food Festival
Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival 10-11 September 2011

Matilda Scarfe’s South African food is all about simplicity, authenticity and connecting you to the sources or the food you are eating, exactly what The Real Food Festival on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is all about.
Maleny grandmother Maltilda Scarfe emigrated from South Africa to Australia in 1983, settling in Maleny in 1992.
Matilda is running out of fingers to put in the many pies she has charge of: The African Cottage, The Rondawel and Kalahari Cottages are charming South African style cottages and self-contained accommodation. She has produced her second book called 'Cooking for Pleasure' which is a delightful publication full of easy recipes for every day family cooking as well as entertaining friends.
And then there's her range of chutneys, spices, marinades and sauces which are sold Australia-wide under the Figtree Cottage label.
Matilda also hosts cooking classes at The Ginger Factory once a year alongside a friend making North African dishes to match each of Matilda’s South African dishes.

After The Real Food Festival, Matilda is leading a group of 12 on a Gourmet Culinary Tour around South Africa. Over three weeks, guests experience traditional African, Malay, Indian, seafood and game food cooking classes and meals and stay in deluxe accommodation on game reserves, in caves in the mountains and right on the beach where you walk down and pick your own lobsters from the village fishing boats. Certainly makes for a memorable culinary tour.
