PAIRED: Champagne & Sparkling Wines by Fran Flynn and David Stevens-Castro

PAIRED: Champagne & Sparkling Wines (the food & wine matching recipe book for everyone) written by Fran Flynn and David Stevens-Castro has received a multitude of prestigious international awards. Most recently the U.S. based Writer's Digest Book Awards presented a 'First Prize' in the Reference Category of this major competition that attracts close to 3,000 entries.

In the same week the book was announced as a finalist in the Wine Communication Awards of Australia in the Best Wine Book category. Additionally it won a ‘Best in the World Award’ in the Food & Wine Matching category at the prestigious Gourmand World Cook Book Awards in Yantai, China in May 2016. The Australian cookbook published by Paired Media was competing with 208 other countries.

This followed on from two Best in AustraliaGourmand awards at the beginning of the year in the categories of Food & Wine Matching and French Wine, which qualified the book to represent Australia in both categories at the Gourmand Awards World Event.

“These wins are a fantastic achievement especially since this self-published book is our first. We are truly honoured to receive such great accolades, particularly competing with so many large, established publishing companies around the globe. The endorsement for our efforts will spur us on to get the next two books in the series - PAIRED: Whites & Roses and PAIRED: Reds - the first of which is scheduled for release in 2017, along with a Kindle version of our first book” says co-author Fran Flynn.

The book is the first in a series that provides instructions on how to easily match food and wine. It features delicious home cooked recipes along with approachable expert advice in a full-colour hard cover book.

David Stevens-Castro grew up in Chile playing in the vineyards of his grandfather's farm. He was also inspired by his aunt and uncle who had a wine analysis laboratory. Fast forward a few decades, with a degree in Agricultural Science under his belt (specialising in wine and fruit production) and a passion for food and wine in his belly, David set out exploring Australia and enriched his career as a sommelier in several five star locations. These days he is a highly respected, award winning, wine expert, whose admirable palate is regularly employed for food and wine selection and menu design as well as critiquing wines and writing wine articles for many publications.

Fran Flynn honed her skills in all things creative in the Emerald Isle of Ireland - before setting off on many adventures that meandered her through five different continents. After working her way up through creative agencies, this award winning photographer and designer settled in Australia and has now run her own successful creative studio for over ten years. Their worlds collided in the sunny, romantic town of Byron Bay and eight years later – now based in the Gold Coast – they have combined their skills to present what they know and love the most: food and wine, with a narrative style that is unique, compelling and accessible to everyone.

PAIRED Media is a boutique publishing company that has been founded by the couple to support this and future publications.

The Writer's Digest have been hosting the Annual Self-Published Book Awards for 25 years. The competition, co-sponsored by Book Marketing Works, LLC spotlights today’s self-published works and honours self-published authors. The prize winners receive a monetary prize as well as a selection of benefits. The hotly contested awards are restricted to only nine categories and attract thousands of entrants from all around the world.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards were founded in 1995 in Spain by Edouard Cointreau (of the famous Cointreau family) to honour the best food and wine books in the world and to increase knowledge and respect for the food and wine culture. The competition has grown to be the most prestigious for this genre in the world. Publishers from over 200 countries nominate thousands of books every year. Selected books first compete on a national level before moving on to The Best in the World competition. All types of publishers, from large publishing houses, to self-publishers are invited to participate. Eduard Cointreau considers professional self-publishing to be the fastest growing segment in the publishing industry.

The annual Wine Communicator Awards recognise an outstanding contribution to, and excellence in, wine communication in all its forms. Awards are presented in a number of categories, then the overall Wine Communicator of the Year is selected from the category winners.
