The Dutschke Wines St. Jakobi Church block is located in Lyndoch, Barossa Valley, South Australia. It was formerly called Willow Bend Wines.
Currently forty five acres are planted with Shiraz making up one third of the vineyard, the balance includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay.
Initially the majority of grapes where sold to other wineries but in 1990 owners Ken and Wayne decided to keep some of these grapes for themselves and start producing wine of their own from this vineyard under the brand "WillowBend". Production never intended to be a big time operation, with the bulk of the fruit each year being delivered to the Krondorf and Mildara Blass Winemakers. Then with the 1998 vintage release, interest from the US led to the name being changed to Dutschke Wines and production for future vintages was revved up to support this market and many others to follow, not to mention an increasing number of thirsty mail order customers.
My Dad Has Purple Hands is a story covering the steps of winemaking from vineyard to bottle. All seen through the eyes of a little girl who is growing up on a property with vineyard, a small winery and a Dad who comes home each night with purple hands.
Written by Wayne Dutschke (winemaker and owner, Dutschke Wines) and illustrated by Paul “Pablo” Cassidy (great mate and graphic designer extraordinaire), it is three years in the making after Wayne's mother-in-law suggested he write a book about a kid whose Dad is a winemaker.
