Nature’s benevolence is evident on every side in the Adelaide Hills wine region. Rolling vineyards, orchards, market gardens, fine restaurants, striking wineries... and a gastronomic culture that entices visitors from all around the globe.

Officially in the Mount Lofty Ranges wine zone, the Adelaide Hills GI includes the sub-regions of Lenswood and Piccadilly Valley. It is all quickly accessible from Adelaide.

Here is an easygoing day out. First a winding drive from Adelaide, via Magill Road and Norton Summit to Lobethal, gives an excellent overview of the tightly folded hills terrain. And last, after a day of tasting and touring, the drive returns home via the South Eastern Freeway from Hahndorf. In between there’s no end of things to do – gastronomic and oenologic.

Stop 1 Cellar door and morning coffee

Golding Wines
Western Branch Road
Lobethal SA 5231
Phone (08) 8389 5120

Pause for coffee and wine tasting at this stylish family owned operation. The Adelaide Hills region is noted for sauvignon blanc and their range includes a version made totally from Marlborough NZ fruit, another from 100% local material and yet another from about half of each. Enjoy comparing and contrasting them. More »

Stop 5 Lunch

The Lane
Ravenswood Lane
Hahndorf SA 5245
Phone (08) 8388 1250

Excellence in cuisine and proximity to Adelaide compound the popularity of this restaurant-in-a-vineyard but it is the company’s wines that have earned five-star status in Halliday 2010. All told, The Lane has become a destination worth targetting. It is wise to book. More »

After lunch, a stroll along Hahndorf’s busy main street is always good for one’s digestion. While you’re at it, here’s a pair of interesting stops.

Stop 6 Cheese

Udder Delights Cheese Cellar
91a Main Street (corner of Hereford)
Hahndorf SA 5245
Phone (08) 8388 1588

Harris Smokehouse
37 Main Road (next door to the Hahndorf Inn)
Hahndorf  SA 5245
Phone (08) 8388 7000
