Flaxman wines is located at a small old vineyard overlooking Flaxman's Valley, in Angaston, in the Eden Valley of South Australia. A proven Shiraz and Riesling area with names like Three Rivers, Pewsey Vale and Heggies as neighbours the property consists of 2 ½ acres of 45+ year old Riesling, ½ acre of 45+ year old Semillon and 2 acres of 55+ year old Shiraz.
All of their vines are dry grown, hand pruned and handpicked. They keep yields low about 1 ½ tonnes to the acre and basically treat the vineyard as a garden, right down to mowing the midrows with a ride-on mower to help prevent soil compaction. Flaxman wines also buy a small amount of Shiraz and Cabernet from vineyards which implement similar techniques. The red wines are then made in a traditional style, open fermenters, piggage and basket pressing and the whites are whole bunch pressed; the Semillon has the cordons cut approx 3 weeks prior to picking.
