Hallifax Wines is located in the cooler and higher south eastern corner of McLaren Vale some 40 kilometres south of Adelaide, Halifax Vineyard lies 9 kilometres from the waters of Gulf St Vincent and immediately beneath the Willunga Escarpment which rises 300 to 400 metres above sea level. The proximity to the ocean and the hills, together with the prevailing cool easterly gully winds in the afternoons and evenings moderate the normally warm to hot summers.
The gently sloping 4 hectare vineyard is planted on soils which are predominantly brown Urrbrae loam over red clay and stratas of ancient river bed shale washed down from the hills immediately behind the vineyard.
Hallifax Wines takes a minimalist approach in the winery – they see their role as encouraging, not directing their wines through fermentation and maturation. They seek to make wines with structure and texture, as much as intensity, purity and complexity of flavours, to ensure they are readily enjoyed with food and adaptable with a wide range of dishes and have the capacity to age gracefully.
