Hastwell and Lightfoot in McLaren Vale in South Australia is a partnership of old friends Mark and Wendy Hastwell and Martin and Jill Lightfoot. Happily after 18 years in business together, they are still old friends.
The vineyard started back in late 1987 with the observation, 'there has got to be something better to do than work in an office for the rest of your life'. They found there was. In May '88 they bought their first property on the beautiful northern slopes of McLaren Vale. This purchase was 22 acres and vineyardless because the original vineyard had been pulled out in the famous vine pull of 1982. With the aid of the best viticultural advisor for miles around, Geoff Hardy, they started learning the job. By November '88 they had gone from a bare paddock to a 13 acre planted, trellised and irrigated vineyard.
They have now completed the project and are proud of their 43 acres of vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Viognier.
