Established in 1890, Kay Brothers is the oldest winery in McLaren Vale still in founding family hands.

Located at the top of a hill 5 kms from the McLaren Vale Township, the Cellar Door boasts some stunning panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque valleys and hillsides. The welcome is as friendly as the view is seductive so allow plenty of time during your visit to taste the renowned selection of traditional premium estate wines and explore the Kay Family diaries dating from 1891.

They provide complimentary tastings for groups under 10 people.

Kay's are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from their own 22 hectare Amery Vineyard. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6 planting), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nero d' Avola, Grenache, Mataro and Muscat Blanc. The Kay's winemaking philosophy is to make rich full bodied fruit driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with a mix of small and medium oak cask maturation.

All of their red wines are pressed using their Celestin Coq and Cie hydraulic basket press first used for the 1928 vintage. This method of pressing is both traditional and gentle, resulting in rich, soft wine.

By varying the combination and percentage of new and used American, Balkan and French oak, they endeavour to reflect each individual vintage. Decanting their wines prior to serving will enhance their enjoyment. As they have used very little filtration prior to bottling, a small amount of sediment may have formed.
