Tasmania is again hosting the National Windjam music festival for button accordions, concertinas, and mouth organs. Over a weekend in late October (21st-23rd), historic Richmond will come alive with music from these lovely instruments. To encourage and preserve the playing of these instruments there will be concerts, workshops and dances where all will have the opportunity to join in by playing, singing, dancing or simply enjoy listening to these wonderful Australian musical traditions.
At this year's festival, modern-day windjammers will perform Oldtime, Australian and Irish traditional music, and Saturday night will feature an evening dance with an original Oldtime dance band "The Gay Charmers".
Old-timers like Fred Holland have been an inspiration to the current generation of enthusiastic windjammers. Fred lived his life as a bush-worker in the Mudgee District of New South Wales and who was 88 years old (in 1957) when his music was recorded, More recently, Paddy and Edie Dawson of the Apple Isle have recorded a lifetime of old Tasmanian button accordion tunes which are guaranteed to set the toes tapping. This year's festval is dedicated to Paddy, who just recently passed away at the age of 91 years. It is with such honor and joy that the Dawson's have made their music available to us. They have a large collection of old tunes passed on to them by ear, which is the traditional way. Many of these tunes go back 3-4 generations, some are old dance tunes played for Appleshed dances, and many have never been recorded or documented. We now have a rich collection of our own Tasmanian Heritage Tunes we can enjoy playing and continue to keep alive. The Dawson's also have the assurance that these tunes will now be passed on and enjoyed by many generations to come. During the festival we will be celebrating Paddy's life and music with Edie through a feature presentation.
So, come on down to Richmond this October and share in the fun. Richmond is within easy reach of the airport at Hobart.
