Pooley Wines has two vineyards (Belmont and Cooinda Vale) situated near Richmond and Campania in the Coal River Valley wine district, some 40 minutes drive from Hobart in Southern Tasmania.
Cooinda Vale Vineyard is situated in a picturesque location along the banks of the Coal River, six kilometres north of Campania.
The Belmont Vineyard can be found just before the historic township of Richmond, and is situated at 1431 Richmond Road on the right hand side when travelling from Hobart.
The late Denis Pooley and his wife Margaret established Cooinda Vale Estate in 1985. This vineyard faces northeast overlooking the Coal River at 130m above sea level, being well protected from prevailing winds but still highly influenced by maritime conditions. The long growing season, which can extend into May, with high sunshine hours, predominant winter rainfall, the occasional frost and sprinkling of snow, combine to provide an excellent condition for the cool climate grape varieties, such as pinot noir, riesling, pinot grigio and cabernet merlot.
Being a family owned and operated vineyard and cellar door, the family is focused on maximizing quality and boutiqueness, with most of the wine making done in the vineyard. The growing of moderate yields, well exposed, very ripe grapes are the basis for the fruit driven wine styles.
Pooley wines are predominately made from estate grown fruit and visitors are welcome to the cellar door, 6 days a week from 10am - 5 pm to taste and purchase Pooley wines.
