Tasmania is known for its innovation – in community and social services as well as industry and technology. The O group, a state-wide not-for-profit (NFP) organisation is now able to claim a Tasmanian first – a social enterprise chain.
CHOOSE Cafés, located at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston and the Windsor Community Health Precinct at Riverside, are two successful commercially operating social enterprises.
What is social enterprise? It not only has the ability to generate earned income to support an NFP organisation’s mission, it creates huge opportunities for disenfranchised people in our communities to improve their lives through valued employment.
Supervised by qualified chefs, the CHOOSE Cafés are staffed by people with workplace support needs who are employed under award wage conditions and encouraged to find their feet before entering the mainstream, local workforce.
The cafés are social gathering places that connect people to community resources and services. In both cases the cafés link to experiences and services that both the community and visitors can interact with.
Both cafés serve great coffee and feature snacks and light lunches prepared daily from fresh local produce.
When visiting the north of the state, and taking time out of your wine tasting, visit Australia's largest regional museum, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Inveresk. Not only the heart of the city's arts, cultural and creative community, it gives great insight into the state's history and character and it's also home to a CHOOSE Café so you can enjoy the fabulous coffee and menu while supporting social enterprise.
