Chado is a Japanese-style teahouse located in the mid-section of Elizabeth St Hobart, bringing welcome relief to the otherwise culinary-deprived area midway between the main restaurant strip in North Hobart and the waterfront precinct. Its name means 'the way of tea', referring to the ancient ritual of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Walk into Chado and you are immediately in a peaceful space away from traffic noise and street bustle. You will be greeted by an elegantly dressed hostess - look closely and you may observe that their 'uniforms' are designed by Akira Isogawa, one of Australia's most distinctive contemporary designers. Ordinary Chado is not.

If she is not overseas on a tea-buying expedition, you may also be warmly greeted by co-owner Varuni Kulasekera, originally from Sri Lanka via the USA. Chado is an expression of Varuni's and her musician husband Brian Ritchie's philosophy and love of nature and natural health and wellbeing, and they found in Hobart a welcome antidote to the pace of New York life.

Their range of teas covers 80 varieties, from the hills of Yunnan in China, Japan and Sri Lanka through to Taiwan, African and South America. Black, oolong, white and green teas are all covered, including the rare Dragon Well Tea from China.

Also served are lunches of a Western/Eastern mix - and special Sri Lankan curries on Fridays - and of course morning and afternoon teas, but with an Oriental rather than Devonshire theme. You can also buy an elegant teapot and aesthetic cups to make and serve your fresh tea at home.

There is also a second Chado now open at Shop 3A, Galleria at 33 Salamanca Place, Hobart, which sells and serves just teas.
