Tony Smibert has an abiding interest in what is often called the Golden Age of English Watercolour (1750-1850). This is readily apparent in the method, aesthetic and philosophy of many of his full-wash watercolours.
Smibert is also highly regarded as a western exponent of Japanese aesthetic principles. His minimal landscapes are sometimes described as reducing subject and medium to an essence.
