The McDonalds Burnie International is one of the longest running and most prestigious tennis events in Australia. Currently being one of only two ATP challenger level events held in Australia this year, the tournament sits just below the Australian Open Series, includes an ITF women's event, and has a combined prize money of US $75,000.
Held just after the Australian Open, it attracts some the most talented “up and coming” tennis players from across the country and around the world. Notable players to play in Burnie in recent years include Bernard Tomic who is currently the No.1 ranked Australian player, ranked No.41 in the world and the youngest player in the top 100. After playing in Burnie last year and getting through to the semis' before losing to Chris Guccione, Tomic later had his best ever Grand Slam result making the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Other high profile players include Luke Saville and Ashleigh Barty who both won the Wimbledon junior singles crowns in 2011 after playing at Burnie early in the year.
With a history of attracting some of the most talnt junior plafrom around the world, the McDonalds Burnie International has also been recognised two years in a row as the Best Tennis Tournament in Australia by Tennis Australia at the annual Newcombe Awards Night.
