Hawley & Rubicon Vineyards are boutique vineyards located in Devonport in northern Tasmania.
Hawley House (1878) is the original homestead of Rubicon Estate - a 150-hectare/370-acre property that encompasses a vineyard, grazing paddocks for Clydesdale horses, wetlands and a 142-hectare/350-acre wildlife sanctuary. Established in 1982, Hawley's six hectare (15 acre) vineyard is planted with chardonnay and pinot noir grapes.
The vines grow on protected, east-facing slopes beside sheltered Rubicon Bay, producing intensely floral and aromatic fruit. You can taste the range of Hawley wines at Hawley House's sister property Hawley Gingerbread House. This quirky restaurant and cellar door for Hawley wines is located on the waterfront in Devonport, fifteen minutes from the vineyard.
A winery will be built at Hawley during 2008, with the first vintage to be produced in 2009 under winemaker Sophie Houghton. Fruit wines including cherry wine and liqueur are also made under the Rubicon Estate brand, and for The Cherry Shed at nearby Latrobe.
