Pipers Brook Vineyard, Pipers River, Tasmania
Jon Dakin
Driving through the imposing gates of Pipers Brook and among the immaculately tended vines, you realise you’re at a serious vineyard. A flock of geese may slow down your drive to the tasting area, bit once there the wonderfully-named Gail Gale will take you through a line-up of classic Tasmanian wines; riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris and the fantastic Kreglinger sparklings among them.
With your appetite stimulated, walk a few metres into the café and enjoy a lunch made from the freshest local ingredients, washed down with some more of the wines you’ve just tasted. Pipers Brook is a working vineyard, with the winery right next to the tasting area, so you will see plenty of activity, particularly at vintage time, which runs from late March through to May. Just watch out for those geese when driving out.
