The Design Centre of Tasmania, Launceston, features Australia's only museum collection of contemporary wood design. The Centre is located on the edge of City Park, a short walk from Launceston's central business district.
The Centre houses the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection. This is a collection of innovative work by Tasmanian designer/makers, including Kevin Perkins, Mark Bishop, Toby Muir Wilson, Brendan Sharpe, Stuart Houghton, John Smith, Brad Latham, the Indeco group and Axiom Design. Pieces are selected for inclusion based on their design, creativity and use of Tasmanian timbers, including Huon pine, sassafras and myrtle. Regarded as one of the world's best assemblages of contemporary woodwork, the Collection has won acclaim in the United States, Europe and China. In addition to the Wood Design Collection, the Design Centre also exhibits and tours a diverse range of craft, design and art, both nationally and internationally.
The Design Centre complex incorporates history and modernity in its design. The gallery exists in a series of contemporary, linked spaces and a retail shop is located in the 19th century Price Hall building. In 2004, the Centre was listed in the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary Architecture as one of the world's top 1000 contemporary buildings.
