The cool climate of Tasmania results in some very fine wines

After a leisurely thirty minute drive from Launceston, past a variety of well-tended agricultural holdings in the bucolic Tamar Valley, it’s no surprise to see the perfectly ordered rows of Chartley Estate’s seven hectare vineyard atop a hill at Rowella. Pinot noir, riesling, sauvignon blanc and pinot gris all produce excellent fruit here, the frequently fresh winds no barrier to ripening fruit.

Lorraine and Bill Kossman have won particular acclaim in recent years for their pinot grigio, a variety rapidly winning acceptance for its ability to match a range of food. Their aim is to make a consistent style they are happy with, and of course to take the consumer with them. The young vines of all four varieties have some maturing to do before they produce their best fruit, so the future is exciting for Chartley – just watch this space……
