Humbug Reach produce premium wine at their vineyard on the banks of the Tamar River

Paul and Sally McShane are busy with a large family but still have time to enjoy their three acre vineyard at Legana, just north of Launceston on the banks of the Tamar. Pinor noir, riesling and chardonnay make up a familiar troika, with a couple of trelissing systems in place to give variety to the look of the vineyard and challenges to the pruners. Sally can eloquently explain the highs and lows of seasonal variation, especially with pinot noir – the very light 2004 following several years on from the blockbuster 2002.

The vineyard rolls down almost to the river itself, so a quiet stroll through the rows, sheltered from the prevailing north-westerlies by a very solid natural windbreak, leads to some spectacular watery views, with pleasure cruisers and the occasional small merchant vessel chugging by on their way to Launceston.
