Velo Wines, Tamar Valley, Tasmania
Jon Dakin
A few minutes talking with Michael and Mary Wilson and you’ll know a couple who’ve built a life around their twin passions of cycling and wine. Michael competed in the Tour de France in the 1980s and today the couple divides its time between managing the tiny vineyard at Legana and conducting tours following the great European road races.
Once you’ve taken in the intimate Velo winery, cellar door and tasting area, all contained in the one small building, you’ll have a real appreciation of the term “boutique vineyard”. Outside, on a gently sloping hill, there are just two hectares of vines made up of pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, and some newly planted riesling. Mary will proudly show you the 40 year old vines which produced the famous 1982 cabernet, the Jimmy Watson trophy runner-up under the Heemskerk label, and still providing great fruit.
