Kitchen Hero is a book for the toast burners amongst us. Its goal is to convert even the most inept first time cook into the confident cook with a stock of easy to prepare recipes.
When Donal Skehan called his book Kitchen Hero he wasn’t applauding himself but describing the aim of the book; to make any novice a kitchen hero. This book would seem apt in the hands of any university student as they negotiate cooking for him or herself for the first time.
Step one of becoming a Donal Skehan kitchen hero is having a well stocked pantry. Donal makes this easy to accomplish by listing all the ingredients he feels are essential to a pantry as well as any important pieces of equipment for operating efficiently in the kitchen.
There are over one-hundred recipes written in a simple dot point format making them easy to follow step by step. With a mix of full page photographs and quirky drawings this cookbook has a youthful fun feel. The cookbook is then broken down into six chapters based on the purpose of the food but with names that will appeal to a youthful market including Meals in Minutes and Stretch Your Meals. A brief description of each chapter clearly outlines the type of recipes you will find within and how they will work with your lifestyle.
While many of the recipes would already be familiar to the seasoned cook, many of them have been tweaked adding a new taste or flavour you may not have thought to add before. Highlight recipes include Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Roast Peppers and Zingy Thai Fishcakes. There are also some useful staples including spice rubs and salad dressings that can be adapted to suit a variety of meals.
Kitchen Hero is a cookbook for those enthusiastic cooks who in the past have had the reputation for burning whatever ingredients are put in front of them, but are looking to put this stigma behind them.
