Tasting notes - Boynton's Feathertop Winery (Vic)
The essence of nature
Winemaker Kel Boynton is still involved in all aspects of the daily running of Boynton’s Wines. From pruning the vines, to the science that is winemaking, planning new buildings (in stone of course), new restaurant that will become an integral part of the winery experience, through to brewing new beer, Kel is across it all. It’s a burgeoning family business firmly on track for a bright future.
So as you hold your glass of Boynton’s up to the setting sun and catch the light dancing in the glass, like the mischievous twinkle in Kels’ adventurous eye… know that there is quite a history in its making, there is blood, sweat, determination, passion and fertile dreams in each bottle.
2008 Shiraz
The vineyard is definitely a sustainable and cool vineyard needing zero irrigation or artificial fertilizers. With roots deeply embedded in ancient alluvial soils the grapes produce powerful flavours, smooth tannins and a structure that can age beautifully. A small percentage of Durif and Viognier has been blended for reasons perfectly clear to the winemaker.
2008 Merlot
The ‘08 vintage is quite aromatic with lifted floral notes of violets, blackcurrants, blackberry on top of dark chocolate and a touch of mint. The flavours follow the aromas of dark berries and the palate is rounded and relatively soft with adequate fine tannins to give the wine length and longevity. The marriage of the Alpine Valleys terroir and the variety Merlot is quite outstanding.
2009 Sauvignon Blanc
Often sauvignon blancs are too pungent and vegetative for the winemaker's liking, especially some of the fruit bombs coming from NZ. One sniff and sip is wonderful, one glass, too much. This cool climate Sauvignon Blanc has none of the Tom Cat wee aromas in it, instead it is blessed with subtle tropical fruit aromas and flavours with a twist of fresh lime running through it. Drink before, during and after meals.
2009 Sauvignon Blanc
After tasting his first Pinot Gris whilst working at a winery in Alsace, France, it has taken Kel almost 30 years to be able to reproduce this wine experience off his own vineyard. The 2009 vintage was cooler than normal giving the wine more fruit aromas of honeysuckle and white nectarine and flavours including juicy citrus. It is racy, dry and crisp. A great food wine.
