Opening in 2005, the Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre has added a new dimension to Ballarat's creative arts scene. Kirrit Barreet - meaning the place of creation - is owned and operated by the local Aboriginal people.
The centre was established to preserve Koori culture through education and art. It houses an art gallery, museum, retail shop and gardens. There are six exhibitions per year and an artist in residence.
Along with the main exhibitions featuring arts and crafts from local and Victorian artists, the Centre displays information about Aboriginal Australia and the Koori and Wathaurong tribe. Visitors can view interactive shows about Aboriginal culture and displays of traditional artefacts.
The centre is open 9am to 5pm weekdays. Entry is free.
