Audiences at Opera in the Otways will thrill to stratospheric arias and uplifting overtures performed by big baritone Roger Lemke, Columbian tenor Carlos Barcenas, rich mezzo soprano Dimity Shepherd and sensational soprano Emily Burke.
Exhilarating and timeless operas - all masterpieces dealing with love, loss, sensuality and surprise - will be showcased at the Victorian Opera performance at Cape Otway Lightstation on Saturday, November 26, 2011.
Victorian Opera's exciting programme features works from Rossini's Barber of Seville; Mozart's The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte; Bizet's Carmen; plus Verdi's Rigoletto.
Hundreds of years after their release these works continue to resonate with contemporary audiences thanks to their flamboyant, irreverent, lively and often humorous style, which will be brought to rich life by a 12-piece orchestra led by the state opera's musical director Richard Gill.
More than 20 works from seven operas will be performed in a natural amphitheatre with a backdrop of mainland Australia's oldest lighthouse which overlooks the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait.
The gala will feature a choir of the region's school children who, after undertaking a masterclass with Richard Gill, will perform on the day alongside the professional cast.
The afternoon soiree, from 2pm-6pm, in the grounds of Australia's most significant lighthouse, will be hosted by MC and comedian Damian Callinan. The programme will feature other performers on the main stage, plus roving entertainers.
Opera in the Otways is synonymous with good food and wine. The region's best produce, wine, beer and handmade gourmet delicacies will be available for picnics on the Lightstation lawn.
