'Not many country towns have a winery in the main street, but in Heathcote this friendly place has long been a part of the scenery. The old Thomas Craven Stores, circa 1854, is the centrepiece, a little piece of Victoriana in a historic streetscape with a comfy café and art gallery. The mature vineyards provide Shiraz that's a true regional highpoint, these are first class wines made in a more elegant, perhaps European style, often with a little dusting of Viognier in the mix. While red wine from Shiraz is the main game, don't miss the reasonably priced MCV, a tasty blend of Marsanne, Chardonnay and Viognier.' RALPH KYTE-POWELL
