Established in 1999, Bended Knee Vineyard is located on a north facing slope of Mt Buninyong, an extinct volcano 15 km south-east of Ballarat, in Victoria Goldfields (Melbourne Surrounds).
The vineyard and Mount both take their name from Bonin Yowang– the local Aboriginal name for the Mount. The Wathaurang people inhabited the lands of Western Victoria, around Ballarat and along the coast. From a distance, Mount Buninyong resembles a man lying on his side with knees bent up and a wound (the volcano crater) in his side. Europeans have translated this original name as depicting “a man lying with bent knees.”
