Brown Magpie Wines is located at Modewarre, in the hinterland of the Surf Coast, on the Geelong Bellarine Peninsula, South Eastern Victoria.
Shane's and Loretta Breheny's love of fine wine, food and horticulture brought them to this 20 hectare property in 1998. Siutated on a gentle, north facing slope with cypress trees, planted on the borders, providing for a warm sheltered site.
The pinot noir, shiraz, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay are all currently producing, having just finished their sixth vintage.
The winery is on site, and the consultant winemaker is Karen Coulston, who graduated in wine science from Charles Sturt University in 1995. Karen is well known in Yarrambat for her wonderful Hills of Plenty wines. Karen, who carefully supervises all facets of the winemaking, believes the wine should express the flavours and character of the vineyard.
Brown Magpie wines are handcrafted works of art and science. The shiraz and pinot noir grapes are handpicked, crushed, and hand plunged in small vats; then gently pressed and aged in French, Hungarian and American Oak barriques.
White wines are also made on site. Some is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, while some is barrel fermented in both shaved and old barrels.
The name of the vineyard refers to the rare brown and white magpies that live on the site.
