The Current Finestra Vineyard, lies tucked in behind the Yeringberg vineyard on the Maroondah Highway in Coldstream, within the Yarra Valley region, Victoria.
The vineyard shares the same gentle northerly slope as the aforementioned, overlooking Domaine Chandon. Until 2002, the grapes were sold, and now the Langs are making their own wine, and selling only 50% of their crop to others.
They have also picked up a Gold medal for this, their first Finestra Cabernet at the 2005 Victorian Wines Show. (They have only entered 2 wine shows to date, and picked up a bronze in the other one) With all the above pedigree behind them, I'm sure it won't be long before we hear a little more about Finestra.
The Lang's are serious about trying to make quality wine. They crop at about 2.5 tonnes to the acre and clearly have an excellent site – the wine shows it.
This 2003 cabernet is balanced and gentle, with fine acidity tracing through blackberry dusted with chocolate. Tannins are supple and ripe and the whole wine lingers admirably – it creeps up on you, impressing the more you drink of it. There's almost a spiciness here, though structurally it's every bit cabernet. Very good value.
