Ridgeline vineyard is located in Gruyere near Healesville in the Yarra Valley wine region of Victoria's Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne Surrounds.
Ridgeline wines are produced only from low cropping, single vineyard, non- irrigated vines. The grapes are hand-picked in order that the fruit can arrive at the winery in perfect condition and all vineyard operations are carried out in such a way as to to ensure that the grapes produced clearly express the style of the site. Once in the winery, minimal intervention is employed. The use of gravity instead of pumps and manual working of the fermenting must rather than mechanical methods result in wines which express their own varietal attributes. Fermentation combines wild yeast and cultured yeast to allow for maximum expression of vineyard characteristics.The process is in a word gentle, and combined with an enthusastic attention to detail, Ridgeline is able to produce wines of balance and integrity.
Ridgeline Wines is a family owned and run business. The winemaker, Mark Haisma, has been involved with premium wine throughout his working life from his first job at Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley in the 1980s to running five star retaurants in Europe and Australia in the 1990s. In 1999, Mark had the good fortune to be offered employment at the Yarra Yering vineyard in the Yarra Valley. Established by Dr. Bailey Carrodus in the 1960s, Yarra Yering is one of the premium wineries in the Yarra Valley and Australia. Described by Berry Bros and Rudd in the UK as a complex and unique winemaker who uses unusual and idiosyncratic winemaking methods to create extraordinary wines, Dr. Carrodus taught Mark the art of winemaking from scratch allowing him to develop an intimate understanding of the impact of vineyard practice on wine quality.
Mark is now the Manager at Yarra Yering as well as producing his range of Ridgeline wines.
