Waurn Ponds Estate Vineyard, at Waurn Ponds in the Geelong wine district of South Eastern Victoria is situated on the limestone shale slopes of the Barabool Hills, with commanding views of the Southern Ocean, Corio Bay and distant Melbourne.
Early settlers found the combination of fertile soil and permanent water ideal for grape growing and by mid 1800's the vineyards of Waurn Ponds were the most celebrated of Victoria.
Waurn Ponds Estate is a small 20 acre premium cool climate vineyard, managed by hand to crop under two tonnes to the acre. Varieties planted include: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Viognier, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz.
The unique clonal (varietal) mix from the old world and new world grape growing regions provides a strong backbone of blending options & complexity. The terroir of the vineyard imparts a distinctive Burgundian tight but generous character to the wines which naturally exhibit excellent acid balance fruit intensity & elegance.
